Video: 2009 UNC’s One Shining Moment

0

I have so much to post … Easter photos, Final Four photos, Soccer photos, Bday photos and random ones too… and about our oldest dog Molly passing away. Life, work, friends and parties have delayed my posting time.

Before I forget it, the lovely fantastic One Shining Moment for UNC’s title run! Hayley and I sat at the Sky Bar after the crowd ran out and we teared up watching it on the big screen… then we headed on downtown to celebrate.

Photos: Welcome home Tar Heels, South region winners!

1

Since Hayley doesn’t have school on Monday, we couldn’t resist heading over to the Dean Dome for UNC’s arrival back home after defeating Oklahoma and punching their ticket to the Final Four. I snapped a few photos but outside, late night under a big portable light does not make for quality pix.

It was midnight and cold, so just some quick hellos from players and coaches. Coach Roy spoke to crowd briefly and most players waved as they headed to their cars. But the star of the court was the star again as Ty Lawson was still beaming from his stellar play and the ACC Player of the Year and South Regional MVP couldn’t help but sign autographs, slap hands and generally ooze happiness. The highlight might have been watching him repeatedly try to keep his sweatpants from sliding all the way off and showing us his Simpsons boxers.

I wish Tyler Hansbrough and Danny Green had stopped for a few minutes because Danny still had the net around his neck that they cut down but the two of them piled into Tyler’s truck and headed out. I think Hayley wanted to stow away in it, lol.

All and all, I’m glad we went. We welcomed them back from the regionals in 2005 but not last year… so we are working our mojo to repeat everything we did in 2005 when the Heels won the title.

Photos from UNC-VT women’s bball game, Hayley on ballgirl duty

0

We always love for Hayley to do the UNC-VT game since it is always a rivalry game here in our family! She was all excited this time because she could finally fit in a pair of shorts they had. She’s growing up.

I love the photos at the end of her singing the UNC fight song down on the court after the game and then with Jeff.

Also another cute set of photos from the game of the birthday of long-time UNC women’s game announcer and professor Jan Boxill. I went to high school with her daughters and just happened to snap some photos to share with them.

Photos: Storm at UNC vs Duke women’s game

0

I picked up 25 tickets for Hayley’s basketball team and families to go to the UNC-Duke women basketball game at the Dean Dome. Most of the girls were UNC fans but one was a serious Duke fan, bless her heart. Everyone had a great time, cheering and running around. And of course, UNC won!

(The Storm is 10-1 heading into the last weekend of the regular season and already has the top seed the playoffs locked up, which gives them a bye for the opening round! But they’ve got some injuries to deal with so who knows what’ll happen.)

Photos: UNC vs Evansville; Tyler Hansbrough becomes UNC’s all-time leading scorer

1

Tonight was amazing! I took Hayley to the UNC game to see Tyler Hansbrough become UNC’s all-time leading scorer. My dad got us seats four rows behind the UNC bench.

Not only did we get to see a fun game and see Tyler break UNC legend Phil Ford’s scoring record set 30 years ago but Hayley got to chat with and take photos with Phil Ford and Tyler’s dad. They were all sitting really near us and were just as nice as could be to her.

Phil Ford, one of my childhood hero’s – three-time all-american, two-time ACC player of the year, national player of the year, 2nd pick in the NBA draft, NBA rookie of the year, gold medal Olympic team! What makes me smile is thinking how much Hayley loves Tyler and knowing that I was about her age when Phil set this scoring record. Nice to be able to share something that like – I hope she can take her daughter some day to see whoever breaks Tyler’s record, if it is ever broken.

Oh and if you guys see this, thanks to my husband and some colleagues at InsideCarolina who took over my duties tonight on so we could go to the game!

Photos: Hayley ballgirl at UNC women vs NC Central

2

Hayley was a ball girl for the UNC women’s basketball team for their first game of the season against NC Central last week. They are over in the Smith Center for the year since Carmichael is being re-done, so it was a new big venue for her third year of being in the regular rotation at ballgirl. My mom came with us so it was extra fun.

As always Hayley was great. The staff on the floor asked her for more help than any of the other kids, all of which who were older. She cleaned up messed, asked refs if they needed water or towels, ran errands for the staff on the floor.

Right after halftime she ran over to hug one of the assistant coaches, Coach Tracy Williams Johnston who is a friend of ours, as they were leaving and I happened to catch it with the camera. There is something so nice about seeing someone genuinely happy to see your child and hug them.

That leads into the hysterical post-game story. Hayley has new basketball shoes my mom got her and she gets them signed each year by various combinations players from the men’s and women’s teams at UNC. So after the game, she sees Coach Hatchell still on the court talking to people and wants to get her to sign the shoes. She takes off with my approval and I see her over there, now with Coach Tracy our friend. And then they are gone into the tunnel area that connects the Smith Center court to the rest of the building.

I’m not too worried. She’s around people who know her and knows her way around the court. So my mom and I pack up our stuff and wander over to get her so we can leave. However, she’s not in the tunnel and I have a feeling now she’s gone back to the locker room with Tracy, which normally I just talk my way into but these are Smith Center security guards – not the easier going Carmichael guards. They acknowledge that Hayley is back with Tracy in the locker room but won’t let me back and won’t go get her.

I ask them if I could have Cat Greene go back and get her. Security says who – I tell them she was the head manager for the women’s team forever and is now helping on the floor. But the guy looks at me like he’s clueless. Again, you drop Cat’s name at Carmichael and the sea parts.

So we are just stuck waiting until a guard finally takes pity and hollers back to another coach out in the hallway. Tracy comes out with Hayley, laughingly telling us she kidnapped Hayley and might not give her back.

Of course all this time, Hayley has been wandering shoes in hand around the UNC women’s locker room having them sign her shoes. I’m not mad and I wasn’t really worried, it was just hysterical to me that my kid can get places that I no longer can and that she goes back into their locker room as if it was just the local gym, not a basketball powerhouse program.

We are leaving as Rashanda McCants gives her five and thanks her for helping. Hayley smiles probably not grasping she is an All-American, a future WNBA player with a NBA player for a brother. And in a way, I’m glad that she likes these girls and this program for who and what they really are. I love the influence these girls have on her.
